Monochromatic Paintings
The
subject matter for my paintings is determined during the process of working
with the live model. Seldom do I approach a modeling session with a preconceived
idea. Instead, I allow the process to dictate the content of the work.
Like a stage director, I experiment with the models'
emotions, postures, and movements until an internal voice says, "that's
it." The "it" I am seeking is an enigma, a figure composition
that escapes easy interpretation.
It
is my intention to create oblique narratives which require the viewer
to complete the story by themselves. Pop culture serves us prepackaged
meanings and obvious symbols on a silver platter. Art should do more.
Certainly, if I knew what these paintings were about then there would
be no need to paint them.
