Neo-Classical Works
Perhaps
due to my southern upbringing, the subject matter of my art works leans
toward the mystical and the narrative. The adult figures in my nightscapes
often perform rituals from antiquity or they play children's games of
pretend which have dire implications for adult behavior. Their ambiguous
actions are intended to provide the viewer with a broad range of possible
interpretations.
By
deliberately concealing my brushwork I hope to force the viewer away from
my process and into the oblique narratives. It is my intention to bring
a little mystery back into a world that is rapidly being explained away.
Over
the past decade, the paintings have evolved from scenes of classical myths
into scenes of a present living mythology. The dialogue with art historical
images from my early works has now intertwined with my everyday world.
The new work is a theater of allegory wherein contemporary people reenact
parables from our collective past.
